Going back to the beginning of the eighties when home computer was still extremely rare and when one still was dreaming about getting one for Christmas or trying to scrape together the money to get some kind of equipment. In my case my first computer was given to my by my dad during summer of 1983. But, the year before there was a movie which really caught my interest which was TRON (1982) which is about computer hacker who is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. Honestly sounds like a really bad storyline and while the movie wasn’t that great it did a proper job with the computer graphics which inspired.
So if TRON inspired, then WarGames (1983) really inspired with Matthew Broderick who plays the role as David who finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III. WarGames clearly boosted the interest for computers and everybody wanted to be a hacker like David and this was really the movie that had a big impact on me in regards of interest in computers and technology.
Ten years later the next movie which initialized big wave of computer hackers was Sneakers (1992) with Robert Redford who plays a security pro who finds his past coming back to haunt him, when he and his unique team are tasked with retrieving a particularly important item. Still a really great movie which absolutely should be seen.
And of course going back to Kittin and the hackers, well a lots of music during the eighties also had a fair deal of inspiration of this new sub-culture of young teenagers who found something common with other people around the globe – yes, we did have modems during this period and while my first modem only was 2400 baud. It was a totally new world to be explored.
So with that let’s make wrap with the above music video by Miss Kittin & The Hacker with the songs “1982” (Vitalic Remix) from 1998 thought, but still. Tribute to the year of the Dragon – 1982.
